Underfloor Heating in a Slab Plus Screed or Beam and Block Floor Construction

This is by far the most popular and effective floor construction technique for underfloor heating. The screed provides good conductivity to transfer the heat from the pipes to the floor surface. Reducing the total amount of thermal mass by placing the insulation under the screed, means that the response time will be quicker and it will be more economical than if using a solid slab construction. Liquid pouring screeds are increasingly used instead of concrete. These gypsum based screeds are extremely strong, very durable and provide a working surface 24 hours after pouring. They are not prone to shrinkage cracking, and are much more thermally stable than concrete. If using a pouring screed, the thickness can be reduced from 60 - 75mm to around 50mm.

slab plus screed with ufh floor diagram

This technique is preferred by many builders, and certainly by us. A concrete sub-base is poured and the construction of the house may then continue right up to second fix before the pipes need to be installed. High density extruded polystyrene insulation is used at a thickness to satisfy building regulations or preferably beyond. We currently recommend a minimum of 75mm thickness. The pipes are attached to the insulation and a 60mm - 75mm concrete screed is poured around the pipes to give at least 40mm cover over the pipes. This gives good thermal conductivity with a faster response time than a full concrete slab. You can also use a pouring/anhydrite screed.
